Our Day of Volunteering at Boys and Girls Haven | Mondays With Milt

Last Monday, a couple of WireCrafters' team members swapped their regular workday routine for something a bit different - a day of volunteering at the local Boys and Girls Haven. This wasn't our first time here, and hopefully, it won't be our last. For those unfamiliar with the initiative, Boys and Girls Haven is a sanctuary for children, typically aged 11 to 17, who aren't in foster care or at home but are instead cared for at this facility. The goal is to provide a safe, nurturing environment that helps these kids get back on the right track.

From our welding department, we had Rob Dyson, and from our engineering department, Tony Schnurr. Both had signed up voluntarily to join us for the day, driven by a shared desire to contribute positively to the community. When asked about their motivations, Rob highlighted the opportunity to "help others out" and "do nice things for the community." Besides, as Rob humorously added, it was a good chance to "get out of the work booth, flex a little, and maybe lose a few pounds!"

Tony, from the engineering department, also shared his reasons. He enjoys the hands-on nature of the work, the opportunity to give back to the community, and the break from the everyday routine of work. Plus, on this particular day, the weather was a refreshing change from the sunny and humid climate we've been having.

Billy Garrett, from our shipping department, joined us as well. He spoke with great compassion about the children at the Haven, acknowledging their challenging circumstances. His hope was that his efforts, as small as they may seem, could help these children feel safer and happier. Billy said it best, "it's part of us as humans to help each other."

So, there you have it - our day at Boys and Girls Haven, filled with sweat, smiles, and a sense of accomplishment. We're back at work now, but we're already looking forward to our next opportunity to help out. If your company has been contemplating getting involved in community service, we can't recommend it highly enough. There's something uniquely rewarding about stepping outside of your day-to-day and using your time and energy to make a difference. See you again in a week or two!
